Dr. Larry Goodman
As a coach, I've seen how navigating the parenting landscape today can be overwhelming. A dedicated mother, one of my recent clients, came to me with a pressing concern — how to raise her daughter with the timeless values she cherished from her upbringing while embracing modern life's realities.
This challenge is common among parents, especially those who grew up with certain life skills and values that are being lost or overlooked today. The digital age, societal shifts, and evolving social norms have made it difficult to teach foundational skills that cultivate independence, resilience, and emotional intelligence in children.
Here’s how I guided my client and how you can implement these same strategies to foster balance in your own parenting journey:
1️⃣ Reintroduce the Power of Independence
Lesson: Gen X kids often thrived on unsupervised play, which developed problem-solving skills and self-confidence. However, today’s culture of constant oversight can hinder that growth.
Coaching Tip: Gradually loosen the reins. Start by allowing your child small, age-appropriate opportunities to make decisions and navigate situations without intervention.
Example Exercise: Suggest activities where your child plays without structured rules, like creating games or solving puzzles independently.
2️⃣ Build Emotional Intelligence Through Communication
Lesson: Many Gen X parents lacked emotional support growing up. As a result, they sometimes struggle to model open communication and vulnerability for their children.
Coaching Tip: Implement regular, judgment-free family check-ins. Encourage your child to express emotions and practice empathy during these conversations.
Example Exercise: Introduce a “Feelings Jar.” Family members write down how they feel each day, then discuss themes during weekly meetings.
3️⃣ Teach Money Mindfulness
Lesson: Budgeting and financial literacy are often overlooked in today's digital and cashless society.
Coaching Tip: Start with simple lessons about saving and spending. Show your child how to physically count and budget money, even if it’s just for small allowances or toy purchases.
Example Exercise: Create a “Savings Goal Chart” with your child. Every time they save money, they mark their progress, reinforcing the value of delayed gratification.
4️⃣ Navigate the Digital World Wisely
Lesson: Technology is here to stay, but it shouldn’t replace critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Coaching Tip: Limit reliance on devices by teaching traditional navigation methods (like reading maps) and fact-checking online information together.
Example Exercise: Have a weekend “Digital Detox Challenge” where you and your child find your way to a destination using only physical maps and observation.
5️⃣ Model Healthy Conflict Resolution
Lesson: Many children today avoid conflict altogether, often resorting to "ghosting" rather than confronting issues directly.
Coaching Tip: Demonstrate how to handle disagreements calmly and respectfully. Guide your child through discussions about misunderstandings and finding common ground.
Example Exercise: Role-play potential conflicts with your child, then debrief about what strategies worked best.
A Personal Transformation for the Mother
My client realized that finding balance wasn’t about rejecting the present or clinging solely to the past. Instead, it was about blending the wisdom of traditional life skills with modern realities. By adopting these steps, she saw her daughter become more independent, emotionally aware, and confident in navigating both the digital and physical world.
If you’re struggling to navigate similar challenges, know that you’re not alone. Through personalized coaching, I can guide you toward practical solutions to empower both you and your children.
